Facebook: Assault’s Ok

If you haven’t heard about this yet, Facebook is under heavy fire from feminists and supporters of anti-violence from all over the world.

When Thorlaug Agustsdottir, an Icelandic woman and Facebook user found a page that was saying negative things about women, and commented against them, someone Photoshopped a picture of her to make her look beat up.

The text in the photo says “women are like grass, they need to be beaten/cut regularly”. Thorlaug contacted Facebook to get the photo removed, but Facebook did not do this as it didn’t meet their criteria of removing pictures.

In the almighty world of Facebook, it’s not okay to have a picture of a breast, but it’s fine to have one of violence, since, well, there isn’t any nudity. Facebook apologized – sort of – but is seemingly not making any changes to their policies.

Anyone else want to delete their Facebook account to prevent them from making money off of our online visits? I am suspending my account until they pull their heads out of their asses and change what they deem acceptable. If any of you want to join me on this, I would love the company!

I found out about this outbreak from Mashable. Also interesting is the article on Wired (which was where the story was picked up in the United States).
